Givinostat update
01.12.2025
There has been a recent update on givinostat, a potential treatment for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, which is currently being assessed for use on the NHS in England.
Givinostat has shown promising results in clinical trials, where it has helped slow the progression of Duchenne. This could make a meaningful difference for children and families living with the condition.
At the moment, givinostat is being reviewed by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), the body responsible for deciding which treatments should be available through the NHS in England. Following their first meeting on 10 July 2025, the committee has asked for more evidence before making a final decision.
While it is common for NICE to either recommend a treatment or request further discussion at this stage, in this case, they have asked for additional evidence before deciding. This means a final decision has not yet been made. Although this may feel frustrating for families waiting for progress, gathering robust evidence is an important part of ensuring treatments are safe, effective, and accessible in the long term.

The DMD Hub
The DMD Hub was launched in 2016 as a collaboration between Duchenne UK and two centres of neuromuscular excellence: the John Walton Muscular Dystrophy Research Centre in Newcastle and Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. It brings together a network of specialist sites with trained staff who can deliver clinical trials for Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

The aim of the DMD Hub is to ensure that everyone living with Duchenne has access to clinical research opportunities, wherever possible.
The Clinical Trial Finder on the DMD Hub website provides clear, up-to-date information on current and upcoming trials across the UK. It includes helpful summaries of each trial so families can understand what’s involved and make informed choices. The Hub also offers guidance on what to consider before taking part in research.
For updates on the latest clinical trials, medical research and developments in the Duchenne community, you can visit the DMD Hub news section or sign up to receive the DMD Hub newsletter.
